Santa Clarita, a Los Angeles bedroom community, is the fourth-largest city in LA County behind Los Angeles, and the twenty-fourth largest city in the State of California. Our valley boasts a population of over 275,000+. Santa Clarita is a more affluent city compared to Los Angeles County as a whole and also compared to the entire State of California. The median family income in 2006 is $80.000. The City is also economically stable with the lowest unemployment rate in Los Angeles County among cities with populations over 100,000.
Santa Clarita is nestled in a quiet little valley just 35 miles northwest of the City of Los Angeles and an hour from the beaches. Santa Clarita doesn't really have "weather" here, as in other parts of the country. Our rain usually arrives between November and March; we get about 15 to 18 inches of rain annually. Winters are mild here--about 55 to 65 degrees during the day and dipping down to almost freezing overnight. We get a dry heat here in the summers, usually in the 90s. Late August and September days can exceed 100 degrees while evenings can still drop below 60 degrees. But remember, we don't have the humidity so it doesn't feel as hot as it does in the Midwest or on the East Coast.
Worried about the smog of LA? Santa Clarita was the recipient of the 2008 Model Community Award presented by the South Coast Air Quality Management District. The award was given for the SCV's innovative and aggressive efforts toward improving air quality.
Residents are drawn to the Santa Clarita Valley by its outstanding public schools. Many of the local schools rank among the top 10 percent in California based on the California Assessment Program and have received Distinguished School awards from the California Department of Education or National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence awards. Students in grades K through 6 attend schools in the NEWHALL, SAUGUS, SULPHUR SPRINGS, and CASTAIC school districts. Students across the valley in grades 7 through 12 are served by the William S. Earn an AA, BS, MS, or PhD in Santa Clarita at COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS (COC), MASTERS COLLEGE, CAL ARTS and GOLDEN OAK ADULT SCHOOL. Additionally, career courses, extension classes, and an opportunity for high school students to attend college (while still in high school) are all offered at COC.
HENRY MAYO NEWHALL MEMORIAL HOSPITAL provides emergency care 24 hours a day, seven days a week and is certified for pediatric emergency care. PROVIDENCE HOLY CROSS MEDICAL CENTER, ranked in the top 3 percent nationwide in 2003 by the JOINT COMMISSION ON ACCREDITATION OF HOSPITAL ORGANIZATIONS, opened a health center in Valencia in the summer of 2005.
Things To Do In Santa Clarita
If you like the outdoors, you’ll want to spend time rollerblading or walking on our paseos (footpaths). There is beautiful wilderness within five minutes of the city, and we have plenty of community parks. Of course, there is golfing, Six Flags, and swimming…LOTS of swimming.
Santa Clarita has an aquatics center with three pools, one of which has a zero-depth entry for the children. City pools are open all over the valley, and many neighborhoods have their own pools. Additionally, we have a couple of lakes. And the beach, as we’ve said earlier, is only about an hour away.
Santa Clarita is a mecca of shopping and restaurants. We have a beautiful ice-skating center, community gymnasiums, bowling, and laser tag. There’s also organized sporting events, community playhouses, and free summer concerts.
You have to work pretty hard to be bored here.
Seeing Celebrities
Because Santa Clarita is located within the “30-mile zone” of Hollywood, hit shows like CSI, NCIS, Big Love, and The Unit film here routinely. Feature films There Will Be Blood, Charlie Wilson’s War, Star Trek XI, Yours, Mine and Ours, Terminator (2 and 3), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, and Spider-Man 3 were also filmed here. There are hidden studios and movie ranches all around our valley, but many times filming is done in public areas.
